Like top-down racing games before it, 3-D Ultra RC Racers proves you don't need a fancy first-person engine to impress your audience. The action is fast, the graphics are good, and the sounds of RC racing--the chirping of the steering servos, the bumping of plastic against concrete, the humming of tiny electric motors--have been captured flawlessly.
You'll race one of four vehicles--sport buggies, stadium and monster trucks and Baja bugs--on eight tracks ranging from a backyard rally to a haunted house romp. The cars and tracks are rendered beautifully, and the latter are full of setting-appropriate obstacles like lawn furniture, swing sets, and even pesky frogs that leap out in front of your car. (There's even a bomb-throwing lawn gnome.)
Along the way, you'll collect power-ups, use them on your opponents to take the lead, and grab more to defend it. Turbo Boost provides a surge of speed, while the Bottle Rocket knocks other cars out of the race, and the Ghost Drive that let's you phase through obstacles. The mechanics are similar to Nintendo's Super R/C Pro Am--only using the graphical and audio power of a PC.
The only problem I encountered was my car getting snagged on the invisible edge of an obstacle. Sometimes, this happened even when my car was nowhere near the obstacle. Ouch!
But RC Racers is otherwise a fun game. The tracks look sharp, the power-ups spice things up and the AI racers do provide some sense of challenge. If you love R/C racing or "top-down" racers like Super Off-Road, R/C Super Pro Am, or Death Rally, you'll love 3D Ultra RC Racers.-- Nash Werner / GamePro
