Of course, a game based on H.P. Lovecraft wouldnt be a normal first-person shooter, and Call of Cthulubased on the mythos of an alien race that ruled Earthcertainly wont be. As a private investigator, youll explore a 1920s English fishing village, an ocean liner, and an underwater city. Youll have no heads-up display, so youll have to look at yourself to see your wounds and check your revolver to see how many bullets are left. Disturbing effects like visually apparent vertigo as you cross a rope bridge will underscore your growing insanity as the game progresses.

Many games claim Lovecraftian influence, but few games can actually trace their roots directly to the Cthulhu Mythos, the collection of H. P. Lovecraft stories on which most modern horror is based. In Dark Corners of the Earth, youll have to investigate strange happenings inspired by Lovecrafts stories, such as The Shadow Over Innsmouth and Moutains of Madness. To further immerse you in the horrific Mythos, The game wont feature permanent graphical displayyoull have to check your wounds to see how damaged you are and check your weapon to see how many bullets you have left. A head wound might cause blood to drip down your screen, while a leg wound will cause your character to limp.
Of course, no Lovecraft game would be complete without the chance of going utterly insanelike most of Lovecrafts protagonistsso Dark Corners will feature a sanity system that induces hallucinations and odd behavior (your character might compulsively load and reload his gun, for example) as your character spirals further down the vortex of madness.-- 0 / GamePro
