Review: Diamond SupraExpress 56k USB Modem

I've tinkered with modems for years and I have to say this Diamond's SupraExpress 56K USB modem is one of the most problem-free modems I've ever used and definitely one of the easiest to install.

Take this colorful iMac-like modem out of the box, plug the included cable into the modem and a USB port and then hook a phone line to the modem. Load the installation CD with the drivers, setup your ISP configurations and that's it. It was all of 10 minutes before I was surfing happily along. This is a true plug-n-play modem.

Connecting to Mindspring and the Microsoft Network Internet service providers, the connection never dropped below 45333bps, which is average for a 56K modem. In the two weeks we used the SupraExpress, it only dropped the connection twice--both times on MSN. Logging onto Blizzard's Battle.net proved a positive experience with many "green" and "yellow" games to choose from.

The SupraExpress is compatible with both PC and Mac (though we tested only on a PC) and supports the 56K standard (v.90) as well as K56flex. And it comes with FaxTalk for the PC as well as Faxciliate for the Mac, which allow you to use your computer and the SupraExpress as a fax machine.

If you don't want to pony-up the bucks for ISDN, DSL or a cable modem and can live with the 56K limit, pick up this unit. It's hassle-freeand pretty enough to serve as the centerpiece for your desk.-- Danny W. Lam / GamePro
