Evil Core is as console-like a computer game as
you're likely to see-but without the elegance of
console controls.
This is a third-person Descent stripped down to
essentials: your ship, a mostly-underground
environment (with 3D graphics more attractive than
most 32-bit video games), and plenty of annoying
little enemy ships that try to shoot you down as you
round the next blind turn.
To be sure, you also have a wingman (who is far
more accurate than you'll ever be) and radar that lets
you know how many baddies are in the area. You
can play with your pals in split-screen one-on-one
using the same executable as the solo player game.
(To get to LAN or TCP/IP death- or co-op matches,
you have to shut down and launch a separate file.)
What kept me from having more fun were the
controls. Keyboard control is a joke, and the rudders
on the joysticks I
tested didn't roll the
craft. A gamepad is
crucial-there is
simply no other
way to play the
game.
But even with a
gamepad,
controlling Evil
Core just doesn't feel right. This ship wants to zip
around like a TIE fighter. Unfortunately, the game
delivers a lot of tight corridors and canyons that force
you to move cautiously-cheating you out of the fun.
That said, the cutesy, Vangers-like adversaries of
Evil Core might make a good fit for younger gamers
too impressionable for the intensity of Descent or Forsaken. However, more
mature PC gamers should look elsewhere.-- George Chronis / GamePro
