While they may look like something from an old Star Trek episode and the name suggests a Federation starship, the LCS-2416 flat-panel speakers + subwoofer from Labtec pack a knockout audio punch.
Backed by a 15-watt subwoofer, the LCS-2416 is a three-piece unit that will open the minds of non-believers who think flat-panel speakers are a fad, a gimmick, or, worse, an inferior alternative to more traditional speakers.
After an easy setup, they just plug right in, these speakers + subwoofer sound fantastic. The highs were crisp, the mid-range sound was both solid and smooth, and the lows, mainly from the subwoofer, were deep.
Unfortunately flat-panel speakers themselves don't have the physical capabilities to handle low frequencies, so these "flatties" lose their range without the addition of a subwoofer. This is something to consider should you be looking for the speaker that does it all.
In the end, the LCS-2416 could be a little less expensive (I'm betting flat-panel speakers go down a lot in price over the next year), but it's hard to ignore the fact that the sound quality is worth it.-- Nash Werner / GamePro
