It really aggravates me when I'm laying siege to a castle in Age of Empires II and I have to stop to adjust the freakin' mouse cord because it snagged on something
again.
No more. Logitech has given us the Cordless Wheel Mouse, and we found it more useful than a horde of elite Mongol Mangudai who'd work for free.
No cheap tech here
The Cordless Wheel Mouse uses digital radio technology, which distinguishes it from other cordless mice that use infrared. With infrared, there must be a direct, unobstructed path between the mouse and the receiver. If anything is in the way, like a game box, the keyboard, or your brother's socks, the connecting beam is severed and your mouse won't work.
With radio technology, signals are constantly transmitted in all directions to a distance of 6 feet--that's how far away Logitech asserts the CWM can still be functional--and the mouse doesn't require a direct path. You can have a mess on your desk and it won't hinder the CWM one bit.
Hook me up
The receiver is a box the size of your palm. Plug the attached cord into your PS/2 port and plop the included two double-A batteries into the mouse. If you're starting the unit for the first time, hold the mouse close to the receiver and press the "Connect" button on either the mouse or the receiver and the mouse should connect instantly. It worked really well in our test games and didn't exhibit any "stuttering" or mistracking.
Southpaws take notice: a very cool feature is that the mouse is designed for lefties or righties, so no more whining from yoost people.
No strings attached commitment
We found the CWM for $38. That's about $9 more than its significant rival, Microsoft's own Cordless Wheel Mouse. But until the end of the year Logitech is offering a $10 rebate to entice gamers. (In addition, Logitech also offers the Cordless MouseMan Wheel, which adds an extra thumb button.)
For the price, the CWM is a good deal, and a great alternative to those wire-tangling little rodents we've been using all these years. There'll be no more cord-pulling for this gamer!-- Danny W. Lam / GamePro
