Matrox G400 MAX
Reviews / previews
Weve been waiting to get our hands on one of these little guys ever since the excellent G200 came out. Given that the Matrox Millennium G400 MAX has a more powerful RAMDAC than its near-twin, the G400 (360MHz vs. 300MHz), and clocked just a bit higher (Matrox has a no-tell policy when it comes to stuff like this), it looked fully ready to take on the slew of TNT2s, Savage4s, and Voodoo3s.
What Its Got:
32MB SGRAM
AGP 2X/4X
360MHz RAMDAC
DualHead Display
Environment Map bump-mapping
DVD support
Game bundle and utilities
The competition looks tough, but the G400 MAX has got a couple of tricks up its sleeves (more later). Coming out of the box youll find a nicely packaged card along with a CD containing drivers and demos (including a full version of Rages Expendable).
S3s got its S3 Texture Compression, the Voodoo3s are all about high frame rates, and TNT2s boasts full features. So what does the G400 MAX have to brag about? Well, for one thing, it takes advantage of Win 98s multi-monitor support. Take a gander at the back of the G400 MAX and youll see not just one, but two inputs for monitors. Go ahead and plug em in, enable the DualHead Display option, and youre on your way to expanding your desktop across two screens. We had a ball surfing the Web, using two browsers on the two different monitors. We also booted up Microsofts Combat Flight Simulator, one of the few games available now that offers dual-monitor support. Gamers can have the cockpit view as their main window and then open up additional windows (map view, virtual-cockpit view, and so on) and drag them to the other monitor, or vice versa. Matrox informs us that there are currently nine titles in the works or on store shelves that support this cool feature, including Accolades Test Drive 6 and Activisions Star Trek: Armada.-- Danny W.
