Review: Saitek R100

So you're looking to upgrade from your gamepad to a shiny, new racing wheel for more realistic NASCAR action, but you're not ready to kick in the bills for the top of the line wheel? Check out the affordable Saitek R100.

This wheel handles the range of formula racers to pod racers well, although you'll want to leave the sensitivity at the default; if you set it too high you'll have trouble with sharp turns. While playing a game if you let go of the wheel, it will automatically center, but rocks back and forth before aligning itself - which will send you careening faster than you can cough up exhaust.

The normal driving position - 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock - was comfortable, but the two buttons on the wheel are set about a half-inch out of thumb range. To use the buttons, you're forced to drive at 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock. The gearshift paddles are also set too close to the wheel.

In contrast, the pedals are excellent: good tension and large enough for your shoes. If you don't play games that make use of buttons, the R100 is a good choice.-- Greg Schick / GamePro
