Second Life, developed by Linden Labs, is a 3D virtual world and somewhat of a social networking community that is entirely built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown explosively and today is inhabited by millions of people from around the globe. Citizens of Second Life may customize their avatar or create their own unique content within the 3D space, and/or sell items for Linden Dollars which can be converted into real currency.
