Relic Entertainment, known best for the Homeworld series of space-based strategy games has come back down to earth with Sigma. Another realtime strategy game, Sigma is a radical departure from most other RTS games with fixed technology trees. Instead of upgrading your armies with better equipment, Sigma has you create armies of mutant animals to do battle for you.
The game comes with fifty "real" animals ranging from electric eels, to gorillas, to rhinos, giraffes, and preying mantises. It's up to you to find the most useful combinations to wreak havoc on the enemy. For instance, an electric eel morphed with a bat turns into an airborne menace that spews lightning. Ever want to stick a crocodile head on a giant gorilla? Go right ahead. The trick in gameplay with Sigma is finding the most useful combinations of animals. For instance, a lobster/lion would be a better close range power fighter underwater than a rhino/giraffe, but a rhino/giraffe could see enemies much further away on land.
The game details are few, and it's still in the early stages of development. However there are a few plot morsels to chew on. Set in the 1930's, you have to do battle with a classic "super-villain on 14 separate islands, each with distinct ecologies (and different battlefield conditions). The game will also offer multiplayer games with a random terrain generator extending the replayability of multiplayer maps.
Given Relic's success with Homeworld, Sigma could be a good bet. This unique realtime strategy game is set to ship this fall, 2001.-- 0 / GamePro
